Project Description

Critical and strategic raw materials are essential for the Green Transition and play a vital role in Europe’s economy, especially in key sectors. The Critical Raw Materials Act, approved in March 2024, emphasizes the urgent need to meet these demands within Europe, thereby decreasing reliance on third countries through the use of green and non-invasive technologies.
In Slovakia, the Košice region is rich in mineral resources, and the Technical University of Košice (TUKE) serves as a key reference center with its Mining Faculty and Faculty of Metallurgy, Materials and Recycling focused on processing and recycling.

WIDEX aims to ensure sustainable access to vital minerals for Europe’s strategic economic sectors by minimizing dependence on external sources and promoting eco-friendly recovery technologies.

By leveraging the geological potential of Košice and TUKE’s expertise, the consortium will enhance capabilities in green mining technologies, sustainability practices, and research management. Additionally, it will establish a robust industrial hub through the creation of a specialized cluster and an Excellence Virtual Centre for stakeholder engagement.

MNLT’s Role in the project

In WIDEX, MNLT will lead the knowledge transfer activities in the fields of Sustainability, Circularity and Social Acceptance, as well as provide methodology and expertise in Business Plan preparation to TUKE, significantly enhancing its capabilities.
