Last week, we joined the C-SINK Project Workshop on BECCS and M36 General Assembly Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden. Across both days, the focus was clear: how to move carbon dioxide removal from ambition to credible, large-scale implementation in Europe.

The Workshop on Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (#BECCS) on 27 May brought together 60 participants for a full day of discussions spanning the entire BECCS journey, from use cases and LCA to social acceptability, techno-economics and governance.

🔎 A few key takeaways from the day:
• The gap between BECCS capacity goals and actual deployment remains, underlining the need for coordinated action across policy, infrastructure and investment
BECCS is no longer only a technical discussion, but also a question of public trust, regulation, market design and implementation readiness
• A common closing message emerged around the need for harmonised EU-level frameworks that can effectively support real-world deployment

The MNLT team presented our work on the techno-economic assessment of CDR technologies, highlighting how cost structures, scalability and deployment conditions shape the real-world feasibility of pathways such as BECCS. We were also pleased to contribute to the event’s closing reflections, helping bring the day’s discussions together.

On 28 May, the C-SINK M36 General Assembly brought partners together to review progress, align on next steps and reinforce our shared vision. The day ended with a visit to Stockholm Exergi, Europe’s most advanced BECCS facility currently under construction and aiming to deliver 800,000 tonnes of negative emissions per year by 2028.

We warmly thank our partners at SEI – Stockholm Environment Institute for organizing this event and providing a platform to contribute to the wider European effort to build the knowledge and tools needed for the responsible deployment of leading CDR approaches.
